Summary

Most are here to recharge and refresh。
But someone's here for revenge 。 。 。

An eco-wellness retreat has opened on an island off the coast of Devon, promising rest and relaxation - but the island itself, known locally as Reaper's Rock, has a dark past。 Once the playground of a serial killer, it's rumoured to be cursed。

DS Elin Warner is called to the retreat when a young woman's body is found on the rocks below the yoga pavilion, in what seems to be a tragic fall。 But the victim wasn't a guest - she wasn't meant to be on the island at all。

When a man drowns in a diving incident the following day, Elin starts to suspect that there's nothing accidental about these deaths。 But why would someone target the retreat - and who else is in danger?

Elin must find the killer - before the island's history starts to repeat itself 。 。 。

Read in one day。 Couldn't put it down。 I was really interested to see where the second book would go and I was not disspointed。 I can not wait for book number 3, one of the best crime series in a long time。 Read it, now! Loved this as much as The Sanitorium! Totally engrossing, never boring or slow。 Can't wait for the rest of the series。 Loved this as much as The Sanitorium! Totally engrossing, never boring or slow。 Can't wait for the rest of the series。 。。。more

Disappointed with this one。 I liked the first book in this series, but not this one。 I struggled getting into the story for the first half of the book and I found the events towards the end corny and worthy of an eye roll at times。 I finished it, because I wanted to know what happened to the characters, but it felt like a chore。

No one should have to work this hard to finish a myster/thriller novel

Took a bit to get into - slightly confusing as the Sanatorium was - great fun in the middle, rather cheesy and boring ending。 But 75% was great so I’m rounding a 3。5 to a 4。

Enjoyed even more than the first one! Super fast paced and read like a crime show。 I’m now invested in the MC and I’m ready for the next one!

While I absolutely loved the Sanatorium, this book was incredibly hard to follow。 There were so many characters and none of which I felt much connection to。 There also didn’t seem to be much reaction to the events taking place。 The characters just continued soaking up the sun while bad things were happening all around them。 Odd。 Overall, I was happy to wrap this up and move on。

It was good, but I enjoyed The Sanatorium more。

I was admittedly lukewarm about The Sanatorium, last year’s release by this author。 I approached The Retreat with caution, afraid I’d be hooked by a closed door mystery premise and subsequently disappointed—but, to my delight, The Retreat delivered! Lots of twists along the way, one of which genuinely surprised me and several of which I still appreciated。 The creepy island setting was perfect。 I wish we had more character development; the various deaths and accusations would have hit home harder I was admittedly lukewarm about The Sanatorium, last year’s release by this author。 I approached The Retreat with caution, afraid I’d be hooked by a closed door mystery premise and subsequently disappointed—but, to my delight, The Retreat delivered! I read this incredible book in 6 hours straight, I just couldn’t put it down! I really enjoyed The Sanatorium so I was super excited to read this book, which is the second book in the series featuring Detective Elin Warner, and boy it really didn’t disappoint。 It was wonderful to see the character growth in Elin from the first book, you can tell she’s tougher and more resilient than before。 The rest of the characters in this book (apart from her boyfriend Will) were pretty unlikeable as they wer I read this incredible book in 6 hours straight, I just couldn’t put it down! The pacing was good and I enjoyed the twists, even though I never saw that twist at the end coming though, my GODS, I need book 3 now please and thank you。 Sarah is an auto-buy author for me (because she’s brilliant), so if you’re looking for a good thriller/murder mystery to add to your TBR then definitely make it this one (and The Sanatorium if you haven’t read it yet!)。 Thank you to Bantam Press for sending me a copy this book and some spa goodies to go along with it。 。。。more

Some twists and turns here and I found the central character quite appealing。 I will find the first one in the series to see if it's as good。 Some twists and turns here and I found the central character quite appealing。 I will find the first one in the series to see if it's as good。 。。。more

Welcome back to Elin Warner as she attempts to solve murders happening at a posh wellness retreat at Reaper’s Rock。 The book starts the action in the first chapter and doesn’t hold back。 There are a lot of characters in this one and keeping track of them can kind of be a pain- none of them, save for Elin, are really likeable, either。 I think this is a solid four star read with definite spooky summer vibes that will absolutely be gobbled up by fans of the first Elin Warner novel。 **Many thanks to Welcome back to Elin Warner as she attempts to solve murders happening at a posh wellness retreat at Reaper’s Rock。 The book starts the action in the first chapter and doesn’t hold back。 There are a lot of characters in this one and keeping track of them can kind of be a pain- none of them, save for Elin, are really likeable, either。 I think this is a solid four star read with definite spooky summer vibes that will absolutely be gobbled up by fans of the first Elin Warner novel。 **Many thanks to #PenguinGroupViking, #PamelaDormanBooks, and #NetGalley for the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review。 My opinions are my own。** 。。。more

I can usually predict what’s going to happen in a book, but this one caught me by surprise。 I didn’t many of the twists coming。 Obviously there’s going to be another book with the way it ended, and I can’t wait to read it。 I NEED ANSWERS!!

I liked this book much more than the first one in the series! The main character, Detective Elin Warner, is not nearly as naive and irritating as she was in Book 1。 This story was spooky and atmospheric, and the twists and turns were fun and unpredictable。 It kept me on my toes, and left a big unanswered question, which I hope will be revealed in Book 3! 8。25/10。

It was a solid three for me。 I read it because I’d read the author’s prior novel, which I actually liked better。 I like that the heroine, Elin, is so unsure of herself and has to keep proving to herself that she can do a good job as detective。 She certainly does。 My main issue was keeping the characters straight, which makes me think they were not carefully written。 Elin, Maya, and two others blurred together for me。 However, I certainly didn’t want to put it down, which is always a good sign in It was a solid three for me。 I read it because I’d read the author’s prior novel, which I actually liked better。 I like that the heroine, Elin, is so unsure of herself and has to keep proving to herself that she can do a good job as detective。 She certainly does。 My main issue was keeping the characters straight, which makes me think they were not carefully written。 Elin, Maya, and two others blurred together for me。 However, I certainly didn’t want to put it down, which is always a good sign in this kind of book。 。。。more

Sarah Pearse does it again。 I really liked The Sanatorium and The Retreat was just as good。 It did take a little while to get into because of the slow pace and it was also lacking the suspense in the beginning but if you wait it out it does pick up and gets better。 The only thing is。 The Sanatorium left off with a cliffhanger。 The only thing is。 The Sanatorium left off with a cliffhanger。 And it looks like The Retreat leaves you with the same cliffhanger。 All in all I say read this book。 A huge Sarah Pearse does it again。 I really liked The Sanatorium and The Retreat was just as good。 It did take a little while to get into because of the slow pace and it was also lacking the suspense in the beginning but if you wait it out it does pick up and gets better。 The only thing is。 The Sanatorium left off with a cliffhanger。 The only thing is。 The Sanatorium left off with a cliffhanger。 And it looks like The Retreat leaves you with the same cliffhanger。 All in all I say read this book。 A huge thanks to Netgalley and Viking books for this galley and the opportunity to read this book in return for my honest review。 I can’t wait for the next Detective Elin Warner story。 。。。more

LOVED IT! She is great at suspense and keeping you guessing who the murderer is。 The chapters a bit short but give great perspective into what the characters are thinking。 I need a third book !!

Audio-book with a perfect Narrator。 Suspenseful, great characters and interesting plot。 I had a couple of "how come" thoughts, but I won't add them here in case they are spoilers。 Audio-book with a perfect Narrator。 Suspenseful, great characters and interesting plot。 I had a couple of "how come" thoughts, but I won't add them here in case they are spoilers。 。。。more

When you see there is a new book out by Sarah Pearse it should be a no-brainer that you have to read it! I loved Sanatorium so I was super excited to read this 1。 I find her style of writing very easy to follow and I really enjoy her storytelling。 I also love the curve balls she throws at you。This book absolutely lived up to my expectations。 Being an only child I'm always fascinated with stories about siblings and family dynamics and I must say after reading this I'm glad I never had a sister li When you see there is a new book out by Sarah Pearse it should be a no-brainer that you have to read it! There's also the sister/brother that is fascinating。 This is a story about revenge。 Is Reapers Rock cursed like some people believe or is there something more sinister behind the deaths that look like accidents initially? Sarah Pearse does it again with another chilling multi-layered mystery! The way she is able to make the setting of the story more than just a place but almost its own character in the stories is just phenomenal。 The dark history surrounding the island was the cherry on top for a true-crime addict like myself。 Like in The Sanatorium, I never would have guessed the ending, it had enough twists and turns to keep me guessing until the final pages, but in a way that aided the story。 None of the leads Sarah Pearse does it again with another chilling multi-layered mystery! Excellent book and just as good as the first。 I couldn’t put it down and loved how the end of each chapter kept me begging for more。 I love forward to another book! Lots of twists and turns。

This book honestly felt like a rehash of the first book, but with slightly different story beats。 I was so disappointed too。 I loved the first book, so I was expecting something completely different。
